Pizza Express-Chiswick

For our first Pizza Challenge we figured we would start with Pizza Express, they have been around for over 50 years and most town centres have a Pizza Express. They attempt to bring Italy to the High Street, not just via their restaurants but also with the range sold in supermarkets, most people are familiar with a Sloppy Giuseppe Pizza or Dough Balls.

Pizza Express - Chiswick

The classic menu has stayed the same for years, but the menu as a whole is constantly changing, with re-inventions of the recipes or additions of new pizza bases, like the introduction of the Leggera Pizza a few years ago offering a lower calorie option.

San Pellegrino Limonata

We went to the restaurant for an early dinner during the week, it was extremely popular with families as well as several large groups, by 7pm the place was full. This didn’t slow down the service we didn’t have to wait long for our food.

Bruschetta con Funghi

For starter Jason had the Bruschetta con Funghi, which according to the menu was a new recipe although, he claimed it tasted the same. I had the Dough Balls – in my opinion you have to have them on a trip to Pizza Express.

Calzone Prosciutto Pesto
One of the recent additions to the menu is the Calzone Prosciutto Pesto, which Jason had. A traditional calzone filled with Ham hock, vegetables and cheeses. He said “it was standard for a Calzone, a good amount of filling for the amount of crust and the Gruyere cheese gave it a nice kick.”

Veneziana

My mains was a Veneziana Pizza one of their Classic range, Red onions, capers, olives, sultanas, and pine kernels. This pizza has the added bonus of including a donation to the Veneziana Fund which helps with the restoration and protection of historic building in Venice.

We didn’t have dessert, however Pizza Express do have a great selection of desserts with special Dolcetti section, a smaller dessert served with a coffee for around £ 5 – I can recommend the Dough Balls with Nutella!
